Working with super chunky yarn has taught me two main things.
1 - You will knit up items extremely quickly.
2 - You need a lot of space to store stock!
The first is a plus. I love having an idea and in a few hours, voila! It’s completed.
The second isn’t really a negative as such, but with our old office space it wasn’t ideal. Each of our 140m kidney bean balls of yarn can relax up to 55cm long and 25cm in diameter. A few spun batches and space becomes an issue rather quickly. Luckily we had an amazing opportunity appear at exactly the right time and we have just finished moving into a larger space that is exclusive to Chunky Row.
After working in a slightly cramped and temporary space before I wasn’t able to make it the creative haven I needed. That has all changed! So what have I been up to? Below are some photos of the space when it was first emptied. Looks nice and roomy right? Roomy but very neutral and in desperate need of some character.
I have always had visions of what my ideal office would be like. A photography studio in the corner, racking for stock, a place for all my shipping needs and a desk large enough for me to spread out. I don’t know about others, but my work always ends up spreading around me. To the floor, to the walls, anywhere that helps me process ideas and visually take in all the information I need. Having this space is like a weight off my shoulders. I can take a deep breath when I arrive in the morning. I know I can get my head down and work on the things I need to without interruptions and with the freedom to spread out without getting under anyone else’s feet.
I also had visions of what it would look like from a creative point of view. I want this place to visually stimulate me when I enter. I wanted pops of colour, different textures, lots of light and character. I had already collected a number of old farm relics from my Grandmother who lovingly donated them to my office, plus old photographs of the family farm. Now I just needed to mix the old with the new.
Here are some images of my still on-going office transformation. What do you think? I added lots of small crafty projects into the mix that I will be blogging about in more detail in the near future. I will post up tutorials on the honeycomb and bee cork board and the Chunky Row sign. I have a habit of using all white wall space I can and love filling them with character.
You can also see the first delivery of a stock shipment! Our super chunky yarn is getting closer and closer to being sold online. As soon as I know when our online store will be live you will be the first to know! Sign up to our newsletter for more information or follow me on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram for more updates and sneak peaks.
As you can see I am beyond happy that I have a new space to grow the business in. After a long day of cleaning up and getting the place in order a spot of knitting is the perfect way to relax.
